Neon Pothos Plant Profile

With its striking neon green leaves, Neon Pothos is undoubtedly a true work of art. The leaves are heart-shaped and grow along slender stems that can reach lengths of up to six feet. With leaves growing in an alternating pattern, the plant exhibits a lush and full appearance. The stems of the Neon Pothos are flexible and can easily be trained to grow in a desired direction.

Apart from its aesthetics, the plant is also noted for its air-purifying qualities. Whether displayed in a hanging basket or graced on a shelf or table, this gorgeous houseplant adds a touch of elegance and style to any space.

Ideal Pot Size

A 4-6 inches pot is good enough for a Neon Pothos. Although the plant likes to stay a little root bound, keep an eye on the roots coming out of the drainage holes or drooping leaves—prominent signs of a root-jammed plant. In such cases, transplant it to a one-size bigger container.

Propagating Neon Pothos

Propagating Neon Pothos is pretty easy using stem cuttings.

  • Choose a healthy stem with at least two or three leaves attached and snip it just below a node using sterile clippers.
  • Remove all the leaves keeping the upper pair intact, and dip the cut end in a rooting hormone, brushing off the excess.
  • Prepare a pot with a well-draining growing medium and plant the cutting in it. Firm the soil around the cutting, so it doesn’t topple over.
  • Water regularly and keep the pot in a location with bright, indirect sunlight.

You’ll notice new growth within 2-3 weeks. Hold back on watering at this point and provide the plant with good air circulation to keep it free from pests.

Light

This plant grows best in bright, indirect light, but it can also tolerate low light conditions, making it a versatile plant for various indoor spaces. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and cause discoloration. However, exposing the plant to absolutely shady places will fade its shine and stunt its growth.

The ideal spot for a Neon Pothos would be near the North or Eastern windows or on the shelves in your bright living room.

Soil

It prefers well-draining soil that is moist but not waterlogged. A good potting mix for this plant should consist of equal parts of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite, which provides good aeration and drainage. Ensure not to use the regular garden soil or a contaminated medium to provide enough room for the roots to grow.

Water

Neon Pothos loves to stay in evenly moist soil that does not pool water. It is best to allow the top 1-2 inches of the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Over-watering can lead to root rot, which is a common problem with this plant. To hit the right moisture balance, follow a deep watering session once a week—water the plant until it seeps out of the drainage holes.

Temperature & Humidity

Neon Pothos is native to the tropics and prefers warm, humid conditions, somewhere between 60-85°F (15-30°C), and it is best to avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) or above 90°F (32°C). Also, keep the plant away from cold or heat drafts, as sudden temperature fluctuations might affect its growth.

Try maintaining your indoor moisture levels above 50% for optimal growth of your beautiful Neon Pothos. Keep a humidifier handy to compensate for the drier days.

Fertilizer

Neon Pothos benefits from balanced liquid fertilizers every 4-6 weeks, particularly during the growing season, which is typically spring through summer. Use a water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength to keep the plant healthy and thriving.

Over-fertilizing can lead to yellowing leaves and other problems, so it is important to keep from fertilizing in the winter or overfeeding the plant even during its growing phase.

Pests and diseases

It is susceptible to various pests and diseases, including spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects, which can cause yellowing leaves, discoloration, and stunted growth. To control pests, inspect the plant regularly and spray the infested areas with an organic neem oil solution.

Also, consider wiping the glossy foliage with a soapy solution in case of dust or debris accumulation. This will keep away potential fungal infections.
